Description
Inspired by the contrasting textures and otherworldly horizons of paintings by surrealist Rene Magritte, the photograph ‘Zephyr’ tells the story of a weathered shore that has been shaped by its endeavors of millennia.
The foreground of the rock gives a smooth texture that is comprised of a small grit sand. While it looks smooth at first, a rough, weathered sand is observed upon further inspection.
The background, however, is the opposite. The distant thunderstorms create a rough composition that balances out the seemingly smooth rock, despite there being nothing smoother than water.
Among the balance of textures, the desaturated deep blue perfectly compliments the rich, golden tones of the beach head.
Despite the harsh, coldness felt from the horizon, the warmth of the rocks is a metaphor for the temporary storms of life. We may be weathered, but enduring life’s storms creates who we are.
I’d like to think that the surrealist perspective of the horizon cutting into the foreground rock, displaced by the immense sense of depth to the horizon help us reflect on who we are and what we have endured.
